An Exciting History of Simone Inzaghi vs Stefano Pioli Encounters

AC Milan and Lazio bring in all the prestige and prominence the calcio is so often associated with. Monday night’s encounter will task Simone Inzaghi to overcome his brother’s former employers, led by former Biancocelesti Stefano Pioli.

The two face each other for the eleventh time in their respective careers, with Inzaghi having the upper hand from their previous matchups – winning five, tasting two draws and losing thrice.

Inzaghi first took charge of Lazio as an interim manager after Pioli’s dismissal at the beginning of April 2016 – going on to replace two-day recruit Marcelo Bielsa. The dismissed Pioli was put in charge of Inter at the end of the year as the Nerazzurri relieved Dutchman Frank De Boer of his duties. The first meeting between the two came one month later, on 21 December 2016, as Pioli’s Inter comfortably dispatched Simone’s Lazio 3-0.

That first victory for the current Milan manager remained his only win against Simone until the second leg of the 2019/20 Serie A season – when he led the Rossoneri to victory with the same scoreline. Pioli never tasted victory with Fiorentina when he was in charge of the Florence giants between 2017 and 2019.

The most recent encounter between the two ended 3-2 in favour of the Milan giants, in a thrilling encounter at the San Siro earlier this season.

Their eleventh meeting will be an exciting tactical face-off as both the teams look for consolation with the season nearing its climax. Both Lazio and Milan have a European place in line.
