Former Italian Defender Pancaro Analyzes Lazio’s Defensive Issues This Season

Lazio picked up all three points in the key 4-3 Serie A win over Genoa. However, it was a fixture in which Lazio still had to hold on until the last seconds of the match as Genoa’s clawed its way to scoring two late goals.

Former Italian defender Giuseppe Pancaro remains concerned with Lazio’s reoccurring defensive issues over the course of this season. Pancaro spoke to Radiosei (via Cittaceleste) on this notable issue for Lazio along with the recent play of Adam Marusic.

Marusic is not a defender, but he is adapting. Playing in another role can only give him experience. His best role, however, is as a wing-back. In Simone Inzaghi’s system, he is able to express his qualities at his best.

Lazio’s defensive department is full of high level individuals. Then came Reina, who is a modern goalkeeper capable of playing with his feet. It’s a shame that the Biancocelesti have not been able to make up for the lack of Luiz Felipe.

It will be noteworthy to see whether Lazio’s board has plans to revamp the team’s defensive unit over the upcoming summer transfer window.
