Lazio are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata on a free transfer in the summer.

According to a report from Italian newspaper La Repubblica and Il Tempo (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today, the Roman club are keen to acquire the 33-year-old Spanish midfielder after his contract expires with the Red Devils in the summer.

Mata’s agent, his father, has already asked Lazio for a two-year contract with an option for a third year, although his wages may prove problematic.

The 2010 World Cup winner currently earns around €8 million net per season in Manchester but may be happy dropping his wages to just over half of that figure, around €4 million annually.

The Biancocelesti are looking to rejuvenate the squad this summer, signing experienced veterans to join promising young talents.

The 33-year-old Mata has made 14 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 683 minutes. In that time, he has scored two goals and provided three assists.
