On the 12th May 1974, 47 years ago today, Lazio beat Foggia 1-0 to secure their first-ever Scudetto.
The game was won thanks to a penalty scored by talismanic figure Giorgio Chinaglia just after an hour into the match, producing scenes of jubilation across the stands and in Rome as a whole.

The Biancocelesti ended up playing that match against Foggia with 10 men for the final 25 minutes, creating a tense atmosphere inside the ground as both the players and the fans waited to see if the Roman club would finally win the league title.

Lazio’s coach that season was legendary club icon Tommaso Maestrelli, who sadly passed away only two years after this great achievement.
The Roman club finished the 1973/74 season with 43 points (in the era when a win only gave two points instead of three), two points ahead of second-place Juventus. Chinaglia finished the season as the league’s top scorer with 24 goals, one ahead of Inter’s Roberto Boninsegna.
