Francesco Acerbi had a forgetful performance against AS Roma where Lazio fell 2-0 in the latest Derby della Capitale. The 33-year-old defender was responsible for the first goal that Roma scored before halftime.
Acerbi’s defending of Edin Džeko, allowing the 35-year-old to get by him and place a cross for Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the goal, should’ve been the first warning sign that something was wrong with the Lazio defender.
Then, other aspects of his defending were shaky, as he only won four of his ten duels. Then there’s the red card at the 87th minute that was the cherry on top of a forgetful night. Acerbi’s performance against Lazio resulted in criticism from football pundits.
After the match, Acerbi took to social media to explain his performance to the supporters and apologize for not putting the team first. On Instagram, the veteran defender stated that he didn’t feel right and should’ve asked for a change but didn’t.
I has been feeling pain for almost the entire game. I should have asked for a change, I didn’t want to abandon the ship, I tried to fight until the end! I apologize to my teammates, coaches, fans, and myself. I’ll take an MRI scan tomorrow to make sure it’s nothing serious…
