“We Wanted to Win for Him” – Henrikh Mkhitaryan on Roma Wanting to Beat Lazio for Paulo Fonseca

For about 40 minutes, it was a struggle for both Lazio and Roma to find the first goal, but as the latest installment of the Derby della Capitale neared halftime, it wouldn’t be a 0-0 draw.

Lazio defended well as they only allowed three total shots, but the first shot on goal they conceded would come back to bite them. Edin Džeko would get by Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi and place a cross where Henrikh Mkhitaryan finished the play and opened the scoring.

AS Roma came away with a 2-0 win over Lazio and Mkhitaryan, who broke open the scoring, spoke to DAZN (via Lazio News) about the victory.

The first question that Mkhitaryan answered was over the win and his performance against the Biancocelesti

It is one of the best seasons of my career. I want to thank my teammates who allowed me to reach this level. We wanted to win something, but unfortunately, we didn’t. However, I hope that Roma will win something in the next few years.

Roma will be moving on from manager Paulo Fonseca after this season, and so Mkhitaryan spoke about sending the 48-year-old tactician out with a victory over their biggest rival.

Before the match, the coach told us it would be his last home game. We wanted to win for him, to take away beautiful emotions and memories. It is not easy to win against Lazio, but we did everything to succeed. Today we have shown that we can play against any team and win.
