Coach Simone Inzaghi: “It’s Been 16 Months, I Can Wait Another 3 Days for Lazio”

Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi provided no clues about his future after yesterday’s 2-0 loss to Sassuolo.

First speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) after the game, the 45-year-old Italian coach looked back at the Biancocelesti’s season.

There is a bit of regret for the season, we wanted to finish in the top four, but we will be in Europe for the fifth consecutive year, we went to the Champions League Round of 16 after 20 years, we made the record of 12 consecutive home wins and therefore we take what was good.

With all the ups and downs we’ve been through, it’s a good thing.

He commented on his future and next week’s meeting with president Claudio Lotito.

I’ll meet with the club on Wednesday. Even last year, when we were leading the league before Covid, they were discussing my renewal. It’s been 16 months, I can wait for another three days because it’s Lazio. At another club I wouldn’t have done it.

It’s been five years, each one better than the last. I inherited a team that was eighth in the retreat in Norcia with the protests, now it’s five years that we’ve been going to Europe, we’ve brought home three trophies, we’ve arrived in front of the big guns.

As I said before there’s only one problem: that is Lazio. You all know what it means to me, I’ve been here for 21 years.

Of the 16 teams in the Round of 16, I was the only one whose contract was expiring, but I always moved on and I was lucky enough to have some wonderful guys who didn’t listen to rumours, problems, postponed renewals and in the end, I take this season with a sixth place with regret, but with many good things done.

The Biancocelesti coach spoke about his squad and the new signings.

When there were no problems with the most important players, we beat the big teams. It’s normal that when the most important players are missing, we struggle.

The new signings, like all the other years, need time. When we’re complete this team is fun, I had fun and I think you did too.

Inzaghi also discussed the game in an interview with Italian broadcaster Lazio Style Channel after the match.

We didn’t finish. With thousands of players missing, we played a good game, we had 2-3 chances to equalize. But we’re moving forward.

He discussed the injury to Argentine forward Joaquin Correa in yesterday’s 2-0 loss.

We changed the formation because Raul Moro had played 90 minutes with the Primavera team and couldn’t come on immediately. We played a good game, we deserved more.

I’m happy, after all the events of the past we’re back in the Champions League after so many years and this year we’re in Europe for the 5th year in a row. I’ll take Bertini’s debut, he’s young and promising and he deserved it for what he did in the Primavera.

Finally, Inzaghi spoke about what he would have changed about the Biancocelesti’s 2020/21 season.

The problems with important players at a key time of the season. I don’t want to look at the negative things. We’ve won three trophies and set a lot of records so I’m looking to the future with confidence.

Lazio finished the 2020/21 season in sixth place, 10 points behind fourth-place Juventus. Whilst the Roman club did manage to perform admirably in Europe, it came at the cost of their domestic results, although the team’s performances in 2021 did give hope for Champions League qualification until the end.
