Lazio in Pole Position to Sign Outgoing Atalanta Talent Ilicic With AC Milan Also Keen

Lazio are in pole position to sign talented Atalanta forward Josip Ilicic.

As reported by Italian radio broadcaster Radiosei (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today, the 33-year-old Slovenian forward is set to leave Bergamo this summer, no longer playing a key role for coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

The 33-year-old Ilicic only received two starts in the last 12 Serie A games this campaign and was entirely absent in the final two against Genoa and AC Milan. The Nerazzurri would also be able to shake off a hefty €2.1 million wage bill, instead of trusting in other alternatives found in the squad.

Both AC Milan and Lazio are keen on signing the Slovenian forward, although the Rossoneri’s interest has cooled a little as it depends on the future of Hakan Calhanoglu, who Stefano Pioli wants to retain.

This leaves the Biancocelesti in pole position to acquire Ilicic. With Andreas Pereira set to return to Manchester United this summer, a free slot has opened up in the squad.

The Brazilian also received a €2.5 million salary, and so his departure allows president Claudio Lotito to offer the same amount to the Slovenian.
