Lazio President Lotito: “I Offered Inzaghi a Contract Five Months Ago With a Large Raise”

Lazio president Claudio Lotito explained the situation surrounding Simone Inzaghi’s contract renewal, with his move to Inter imminent.

Speaking in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today, the Biancocelesti president highlighted how he offered the 45-year-old Italian coach a new contract months ago.

I offered him the contract five months ago with a significant salary increase and also add-ons, he told me that we’ll talk about it later.

Then there was the chaos of the court trials and various other events; this is why we could only meet again at the end of the year.

I called him, I gave him an appointment and after an hour and a half we had already shaken hands…

Lotito also explained that Inzaghi had cleared things up with sporting director Igli Tare on Wednesday morning and that they had reached a total agreement on everything.

Yesterday general secretary Armando Calveri was asked to prepare the contract until Inzaghi called and asked for a talk. Lotito realised something wasn’t right and suggested that he think carefully because “what goes around comes around”. The final decision came shortly afterwards.

Lotito also confirmed that he would not rush the search to find a replacement.

I will certainly not decide the new coach in one evening.

The Biancocelesti have already contacted Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, but it seems that the Serbian is considering declining.
