FIFA Introduces Extra Break for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Two Lazio Players Taking Part

FIFA has granted a break to Serie A and other leagues on the weekend of the 29th and 30th January 2022 to ensure African players miss less time with their teams due to the Africa Cup of Nations; good news for Lazio’s Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro and Mohamed Fares.

As reported by Italian media outlet Milan News recently, the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will kick off on the 9th January 2022 and will finish on the 6th February, meaning both Fares and Akpa Akpro will head off to Alegria and the Ivory Coast respectively after the Christmas break.

FIFA’s decision to grant an extra weekend’s break to domestic leagues means fewer games will be missed by the pair, as well as the other players away from club competition.

Many other Serie A players are also involved in the competition, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and AS Milan pair Franck Kessie and Ismaël Bennacer.

Only two Lazio players are expected to take part in the competition, although that could change depending on the events of this summer’s transfer window.
