Lucas Leiva Will Try to Convince Sarri of His Qualities at Lazio’s Pre-Season Retreat

Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva will try to convince new coach Maurizio Sarri of his qualities at this summer’s pre-season training camp.

As reported by Italian radio broadcaster Radiosei (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today, the 62-year-old Italian coach has asked for multiple midfielders this summer, wanting backups for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto as well as possibly a regista to play in front of the defense.

In this summer’s retreat, Sarri will carefully evaluate Lucas Leiva, Gonzalo Escalante and Danilo Cataldi to see if they are good fits for his tactical system or not.

After a year of many ups and downs, Leiva wants to recover his starting spot and convince Sarri that he is still the right man for the job. The 34-year-old Brazilian’s contract expires with the club at the end of next season and it’s unlikely that he will be offered a new deal.

The former Liverpool player made 32 Serie A appearances this campaign, for a total of 2157 minutes. In that time, he averaged 1.90 interceptions per 90 minutes, 2.95 tackles per 90 and won 2.24 aerial duels per 90.
