Lazio Will Open Talks With Arsenal for Torreira Should Escalante Go to Marseille

Lazio will only open talks with Arsenal for Lucas Torreira should they sell Gonzalo Escalante to Olympique de Marseille.

As reported by Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) earlier today, the Biancocelesti have long been interested in the 25-year-old Uruguayan, but may now look to finally secure the former Sampdoria man.

However, Lazio are only prepared to start negotiations once then sell the 28-year-old Escalante to Olympique Marseille, who could pay around €8 million for the Argentinian midfielder.

Torreira would be the perfect player for coach Maurizio Sarri‘s 4-3-3 system, playing in the deeper midfield role alongside Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto. He would therefore be the replacement for the ageing Lucas Leiva, whose contract expires next year in 2022.

The Biancocelesti are also interested in Bordeaux midfielder Toma Basic, but they haven’t pulled the trigger yet on the deal and Atalanta have suddenly come into the picture, giving them the chance to steal the 24-year-old Croatian from under Lazio’s noses.
