Roma Winger Pedro Is a Step Away From Joining Lazio on a Free Transfer

Roma winger Pedro is set to join Lazio on a free transfer and could even arrive tomorrow.

As reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter last night, the 34-year-old Spanish winger is set to be released from his contract by the Giallorossi before being reunited with former Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri at the Biancocelesti.

Italian newspaper Il Messaggero (via LazioNews24) reports that the 62-year-old Italian coach personally contacted Pedro and highlighted his desire to have the Spanish winger on board for his project, which convinced the former Barcelona man to make the switch across the Italian capital; the first time that a direct transfer has occurred in over 40 years.

Lazio do not want to pay for Pedro and Roma are willing to release him from his contract – which will not expire until 2023 – as they want to lower their wage bill.

Pedro may even waive his severance pay in order to allow the Biancocelesti to sign him by midday tomorrow, which would allow him to be available for the season opener against Empoli on Saturday.
