Lazio Have Only Lost to Olympique Marseille Once: The Full History

Lazio have drawn Olympique Marseille in their Europa League group this season.

The Biancocelesti and the Ligue 1 side are in Group E, which also contains Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Lazio’s two games against Olympique Marseille this season are scheduled for the following days:

  • Stadio Olimpico – 21st October – 6:45 pm local time.
  • Stade Vélodrome – 4th November – 9 pm local time.

The two clubs have met six times total in their history, starting with their famous Champions League group game in the 1999/2000 season.

In their first meeting on 24th November 1999, Lazio beat Marseille 2-0 away with goals from Dejan Stankovic and Sergio Conceicao.

In the return game on 14th March 2000, the Biancocelesti famously thrashed the French side 5-1, with Simone Inzaghi scoring four goals, Alen Boksic scoring one and Jerome Leroy netting a consolation goal for Les Olympiens.

Their next meeting came in the Intertoto Cup semifinals in the 2005/06 season. The first match saw Lazio draw Marseille 1-1 at home, with goals from Paolo Di Canio and Abdoulaye Meite.

The second leg, however, saw Les Olympiens comfortably beat the Biancocelesti 3-0, with Mamadou Niang, Andrés Mendoza and a young Franck Ribery all finding the back of the net.

The most recent time the two clubs have met was in the Europa League group stage in the 2018/19 season.

The first meeting saw Lazio come out on top away to Marseille 3-1, with Wallace, Felipe Caicedo and Adam Marusic all finding the back of the net, whilst Dimitri Payet netted a consolation goal.

The second match that season again saw the Roman club come out on top, beating Les Olympiens 2-1 with goals from Marco Parolo, Joaquin Correa and Florian Thauvin.
