Italian Press Frustrated With Lazio Star Immobile’s Poor Performance for Italy vs Switzerland

Lazio star Ciro Immobile again disappointed for Italy in their goalless draw against Switzerland last night.

As collected by Italian media outlet LazioNews24 earlier today, the Italian press were firmly disappointed in the 31-year-old Italian striker’s performance for Roberto Mancini’s Azzurri side in yesterday’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Switzerland.

Italy also drew against Bulgaria last week and so will be desperate for a win against Lithuania on Wednesday this week.

Immobile has consistently struggled to replicate his Lazio form with the Italian national team and despite winning Euro 2020 this summer, little has changed regarding his Azzurri performances.

Below is the Italian press reaction to Immobile’s performance from today’s papers:

Lazio Star Immobile Is Only a Goal Behind Toni & Vialli’s Record With the Azzurri

La Gazzetta dello Sport

  • 4.5: At one point he even stops fighting. Bad sign. First, he misses two shots, although one is offside, and he fails to get into the action. Playing like that he risks getting depressed.

Corriere dello Sport

  • 6: On the dribbling front, he starts well, better than on other occasions, yet his game becomes a constant conversation with Mancini who never lets him off the hook. The usual endless pressing. Only one real chance, foiled by Sommer.

Tuttosport

  • 5: There are still a lot of people who think that we who comment on the national team have it in for him if we don’t give him a pass. But we’d be happy, you can’t imagine how happy if he played with the same mental lightness with which he can carry Lazio. Instead, at this level he runs with a backpack not on his back, but on his soul: Mancini knows it, he notices it, and twice he calls him to cuddle him. This time he only got a few shots in (one he kicked into the corner…).

Il Messaggero

  • 5: Active, reactive, he gets chances but doesn’t score. And he gets angry as if fighting a curse. The goal must come back, this isn’t working.
