Lazio Midfielder Leiva: “We Were Not the Best Before, We Are Not the Worst Now”

Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva suggested that the team deserved to lose to AC Milan yesterday.

Speaking in an interview with Italian radio broadcaster Lazio Style Radio (via LazioNews24) after the 2-0 loss at the San Siro, the 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder first commented on the things that the squad need to improve upon.

Today’s match makes you understand how much we still have to work and improve on movements and on the two phases.

In the offensive phase we forced things at times giving AC Milan the opportunity to counter. Head down, it’s still long. We have plenty of time to recover.

He touched on AC Milan’s aggressiveness in the match and if that caught the Lazio squad unprepared.

No, we knew they would be. In the long run then it became difficult, plus the calls against us and the counters that we couldn’t take.

We deserved to lose, but we have to look and analyse well without panic, because it’s not the end of the world. We were not the best before, we are not the worst now.

AC Milan Midfielder Bakayoko Deserved Red Card for Foul on Lazio Defender Acerbi

Finally, Leiva looked ahead to the Biancocelesti’s mid-week Europa League opener against Turkish side Galatasaray.

In Turkey it will be nice to play, the fans are very passionate there. The Europa League is very important for us, we have three days to prepare for the challenge and rest.

We hope to start the group well, which is very difficult.

Coach Sarri Furious With Lazio’s Performance Against AC Milan Yesterday

Lazio have had a decent start to the season, picking up six points from their opening three games, following the wins over Empoli and Sampdoria.

Yesterday’s 2-0 loss to AC Milan is a disappointing result for the Biancocelesti but is not cause for alarm just yet, as the squad are still settling and learning coach Maurizio Sarri’s systems and movements.

Lazio’s next game of the Serie A season is against Cagliari next weekend on Sunday.
