Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi has apologised for his red card in the loss to Bologna and decided to make a charitable donation.

As seen in a post on Acerbi’s Instagram page yesterday, the 33-year-old Italian defender expressed regret at his actions and rage during the 3-0 loss to Bologna on Sunday, which saw him sent off in the 76th minute after excessively arguing with the referee Davide Massa.

Below is a video of Acerbi’s apology and his pledge to donate to charity:

Sunday I was sent off, I was wrong. I’m sorry not to be able to help my teammates and I’m sorry for the coach and the fans.

I apologise for the bad gesture made on the pitch, it’s not like me and it’s not a good example for those who follow football.

For this reason I have decided to punish myself by donating a sum of money to charity.

Acerbi has been given a two-game suspension as a result of this red card, meaning that he will miss Lazio’s next games against Inter and Hellas Verona.
