Referee Di Bello Criticised for Performance in Lazio’s 2-0 Loss to Juventus

Referee Marco Di Bello did not have the best game yesterday during Lazio’s 2-0 loss to Juventus.

As detailed by Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) earlier today, the performance of the 40-year-old Italian referee has been one of the main talking points following the Biancocelesti’s defeat yesterday.

Allegri Highlights Juventus Were “Patient in Our Management” of 2-0 Win Over Lazio

In the post-match interviews Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri directly called out Di Bello’s decision to award Juventus a penalty following Danilo Cataldi’s challenge.

Whilst it was a penalty, Di Bello’s need to check VAR instead of immediately calling for the penalty highlights his lack of confidence in the game, something that was a running theme throughout.

Sarri Thinks “Juventus Won as They Know How To, With a Penalty” in 2-0 Win vs Lazio

The second penalty was also legitimate, although Lazio were protesting regarding a challenge on Vedat Muriqi during the buildup, something that Di Bello did not think was an issue.

The general feeling, however, is that the 40-year-old Italian referee was not able to keep control over the match, allowing numerous protests and arguments in even the smallest of incidents.
