Lazio Captain Immobile After Loss to Napoli, “The Team Has to Apologize to the Fans”

Lazio captain Ciro Immobile took responsibility following the team’s painful 4-0 loss to Napoli last night.

Speaking in an interview with Italian broadcaster Lazio Style Channel (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) after the game, the 31-year-old Italian striker first apologised for the team’s poor performance in the defeat at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The team has to apologise to the fans. I am the captain and I feel like doing this. There’s no need to talk about the game.

We need to raise our heads, there are so many games between now and the break. We have to react, it’s not the first time this has happened. Now we have to work.

The Lazio captain touched on if the defeat was similar to the losses against Hellas Verona and Bologna in this campaign.

The common factor is the wrong attitude we had. The team has to understand that if you get your attitude wrong, you pay dearly for it.

Today we paid dearly against a strong team. We have to roll up our sleeves because today we didn’t offer a great show.

Immobile discussed the incredibly busy schedule and the toll that it’s having on the squad.

Statistically speaking, we struggle in the second game when they’re so close together. Our attitude must change immediately.

This is an excuse that we have to quickly erase from our minds.

He commented on what Napoli did better than the Biancocelesti in the match.

The approach, the importance of the match. We talked about it even though we had little time. In order not to fall behind, we needed a different kind of performance.

They understood the importance of the match that would have led them to first place, while we obviously did not.

Immobile spoke about where the team will look to go next following the defeat.

Lazio are a team that over the past few years have won because they were unity, humble, the eighth on today’s ball and they helped each other.

You have to find things that we have inside of us. In the next month we need to find consistency not only of results, but also of mentality.

Immobile then discussed the defeat to Napoli in an interview with DAZN.

I’m here to say it again. The fans are right, it’s a shame for them to see this spectacle from us. We are sorry and we apologise on behalf of the whole team.

I apologise on behalf of the whole team as captain, these are unacceptable performances and you find it hard to even talk about the game that was made only on the side of Napoli tonight.

He highlighted his anger at the team’s inconsistent mentality and how that impacts the results.

It’s what enrages you. If it was a team that doesn’t have certain performances in the ropes then you get over it.

This team over the years has shown that after Juve it is the one that has won the most, so we have something. If you have something you have to bring it out.

We have to give consistency to everything, the coach is working well and we are trying to speed up all his things but if you don’t put the right attitude you go into Napoli superficial take the beating and you get hurt.

Finally, Immobile discussed his relationship with Napoli talisman Lorenzo Insigne.

He’s like a brother to me, we’ve walked the same path. We’ve met on the pitches of Serie A and together on the national team.

We had 20 seconds before the match where we had a goal in common but we will think about it in March. We know what we have done and can do.
