Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi was forced off after 20 minutes in the first half of today’s match against Empoli.

As detailed by Italian media outlet LazioNews24, the 33-year-old Italian defender had just returned from an injury suffered in the win over Venezia before the Christmas Break and now things have gone from bad to worse for the player.

Acerbi seemingly suffered a thigh or hamstring injury after 20 minutes in the match against Empoli today. He painfully limped off the pitch with assistance from Lazio’s physios and the injury looks to be fairly serious.

It’s practically certain that the Italian defender will be unavailable for Sunday’s match against Simone Inzaghi’s Inter, a big loss for such an important match.

It also seemed as if Acerbi was booed as he limped off the pitch, a sign that a portion of the fan base have still not forgiven him following his ‘shhh’ celebration last month.
