Lazio have not spoiled supporters with away victories or clean sheets this season. However, against Salernitana in Matchday 22 of the 2021/22 Serie A, both occurred.
It was only Lazio’s fourth victory away from the Stadio Olimpico and their third clean sheet in Serie A, but it was exactly the type of football that Maurizio Sarri wants from the team. The first goal scored by Ciro Immobile and assisted by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was arguably the Biancocelesti’s most beautiful goal this season so far. Unfortunately, despite this terrific result and performance, it will not affect the standings too much, as both Roma and Fiorentina (who are levelled with Lazio) face off against Cagliari and Genoa; fixtures that they will likely secure all three points in.
To save this season, Lazio need to go far in the Coppa Italia. As a result, Tuesday’s Round of 16 clash against Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico could be the most important game of the season so far for Sarri’s men, because it is their best chance of securing a trophy. As the Bianconeri gave the Biancocelesti quite the challenge when the two sides met earlier this year, it will be an interesting fixture, to say the least.
If Lazio manage to defeat Udinese, they will take on AC Milan in the Quarter-Finals, and most likely the winner of Rome and Inter in the Semi-Finals. While these will be difficult fixtures, Lazio have managed to do very well in the domestic cup competition in recent years and if they play like they know how to, they have a chance of adding to their trophy collection this year.
I agree, we have to win the cup now!!
