Lazio’s Leiva Expects a “Very Tough & Intense Match” Against Atalanta

Lucas Leiva expects a tough match for Lazio as they host Atalanta this evening.

Speaking in the official matchday programme (via LazioNews24) earlier today, the Brazilian midfielder looked ahead to this evening’s clash against Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

It will be a very tough and intense match. Atalanta, who have had the same coach for a long time, have a clear identity, they play well and have been playing great football for years now, but we’ve grown in recent years and we want to put in a great performance.

We’ll have to be 100% to try and beat them.

He looked back at Lazio’s Coppa Italia final victory over Atalanta back in 2019.

The Coppa Italia final was a great emotion. We won it, even though we were initially underdogs.

Finally, Leiva remembered his assist in that match.

It wasn’t my first from a corner, I had also made one for Wallace in Marseille. But surely that was more important.

The 35-year-old Leiva, who is contracted to Lazio until the end of this season, has made 27 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1189 minutes. In that time, he has picked up four yellow cards and added some defensive balance to Maurizio Sarri’s squad.

Lazio currently sit 8th in the Serie A table after 22 games with 35 points, seven less than 4th place Atalanta. The last meeting between these two teams this season ended 2-2 in Bergamo, with Gasperini’s side finding a last second equaliser to salvage a point.
