Lazio’s January 2022 Transfer Market Review: Another Miserable Winter in Rome

With the January Transfer Window now closed, Lazio fans have been left twiddling their thumbs following an excruciating month. Below is an overview of Lazio’s moves in this month’s transfer window:

  • Arrivals: Jovane Cabral (Sporting), Dimitrije Kamenovic (Cukaricki)
  • Departures: Gonzalo Escalante (Alaves), Alessandro Rossi (Monopoli), Jordan Lukaku (Vicenza), Denis Vavro (FC Copenhagen), Bobby Adekanye (Crotone), Jony (Sporting Gijon), Riza Durmisi (Sparta Rotterdam), Cristiano Lombardi (Reggina), Vedat Muriqi (Mallorca)

Starting with the positives, Lazio did well to clear out a number of deadweight players last month, with the most important departures being Vavro and Muriqi. The Biancocelesti, and the fans, will be hoping that the pair impress enough this season to earn permanent moves to their respective clubs.

Unfortunately for the Lazio faithful, this is essentially where the positives of last month’s transfer window end. Coach Maurizio Sarri expected a number of reinforcements, and he essentially was only given Jovane, who is more of a winger than a real centre forward anyway.

Sarri explicitly wanted a new backup striker and a new defender. Il Messaggero reported today that his specific requests included Hellas Verona’s Nicolo Casale, Empoli’s Samuele Ricci, Inter’s Matias Vecino and Andrea Pinamonti, but the club’s issues with the liquidity index stopped any of these players from arriving.

The Biancocelesti were also linked with a number of other players, including Aleksej Miranchuk, Mattia Destro, Jose Gomes, and more, but obviously, none of these deals came to fruition.

Last month’s transfer window has left Sarri feeling furious and now he’s only likely to sign a contract extension with the club should significant investments be promised for the summer transfer window.

For Lazio fans, it was another painful January transfer window, with the only saving grace being the lack of more deadweight arriving in Rome.
