Lazio Star Immobile Recalls Source of His Passion for Football & Meeting With the Pope

Lazio star Ciro Immobile discussed his passion for football, the importance of his family and his meeting with Pope Francis.

Speaking to Monsignor Dario Edoardo Viganò for the TV show ‘A Sua Immagine’ (via LazioNews24) earlier today, the 31-year-old Italian striker first revealed where his passion for football comes from.

The passion for football was transmitted to me by my father, my uncles and my grandparents who owned a club in Torre Annunziata. My father was a very good striker and scored a lot of goals.

He was my first teacher. My family, humble but with strong values, were fundamental in supporting me and spurring me on. Without them I would never have made it.

Immobile discussed his relationship with his wife Jessica Melena.

With my wife it was love at first sight. She comes from a simple family. I immediately felt that she could be the woman of my life.

Finally, the Lazio star discussed his meeting with Pope Francis and the faith of his children.

Jessica and I will try to take them by the hand, passing on values and faith as our parents did, but only up to a certain point. Afterwards, they will have to walk the road on their own.

The 31-year-old Immobile, who is contracted to Lazio until 2026, has made 29 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2366 minutes. In that time, he’s scored 23 goals and provided three assists, being the clear talisman of the Biancocelesti squad.

The Italian striker was forced to miss the first leg of Lazio’s Europa League play-off match against Porto last night due to some flu-like symptoms. It’s still unclear if he’ll be fit enough to face Udinese on Sunday.
