Lazio Fall In Tiring 2-1 Europa League Play-off Loss to Porto

Lazio could not hold onto their lead in last night’s match against Porto, suffering a 2-1 loss after initially taking the lead.

The Biancocelesti broke the deadlock in the first half thanks to another good goal by Mattia Zaccagni, but an equaliser before half-time threatened their spirits. Things collapsed early into the second half when the Portuguese side took the lead. They held on at home, securing a key win.

Below are the two squad’s in Lazio’s 2-1 loss to Porto yesterday:

  • Porto (4-4-2): Diogo Costa; Joao Mario (88′ Bruno Costa), Mbemba, Zaidu; Otavio, Grujic (46′ Galeno), Uribe, Fabio Vieira (46′ Vitinha); Toni Martinez (68′ Evanilson), Pepe (Eustaquio).
  • Lazio (4-3-3): Strakosha; Marusic, Luiz Felipe, Patric, Radu (71′ Hysaj); Milinkovic, Leiva (67′ Cataldi), Luis Alberto (83′ Basic); Pedro (83′ Cabral), Felipe Anderson, Zaccagni (83′ Moro).

The match started in a lively fashion, with both teams looking fired up and ready for an exciting European night.

Lazio took the lead in the 23rd minute when a Luis Alberto corner found Mattia Zaccagni at the far post, who made no mistake as he made it 1-0.

Porto tried hard to respond and their efforts were rewarded 13 minutes later when Toni Martinez headed home a cross to tie things up.

It was a fairly even game in the first half, although the pressure was clearly on for the Biancocelesti.

Porto took the lead early into the second half, scoring a goal similar to their first as Martinez scored another header, making it 2-1.

The rest of the second half made for grim viewing for Lazio fans, with the team seemingly fading out of the game.

A few haphazard Biancocelesti chances followed, but nothing of note, leaving coach Maurizio Sarri frustrated on the sidelines.
