Lazio Coach Sarri: “If We Play At 100% We Can Compete With Anyone”

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri wants his team to focus on the upcoming match against Udinese following the 2-1 loss to Porto yesterday.

Speaking to club outlet Lazio Style Radio (via LazioNews24) after the match, the 63-year-old Italian coach first reacted to the defeat to Porto and the positives seen.

We took a step forward in terms of personality, it’s a pity that the first half ended in a draw because we had the chances to score two goals. The only disappointment was the first ten minutes of the second half when we didn’t play well.

We had five minutes of slackness after the goal then we recovered and we could have equalised. Now we’re focused on Udinese.

Sarri spoke about the strengths of last night’s victors Porto.

Porto are a strong team, in the last months they have eliminated Juve and Milan from the Champions League, it is not easy to come here to play. We seem to be a growing team, we have to avoid relapses and now thinking about Udinese.

He touched on what approach Lazio will have heading into their next match against Udinese on the weekend.

Sunday’s approach must be the same as today’s, we must understand that if we play at 100% we can compete with anyone, the difficult thing is to always succeed.

We’ve been improving in the last three months because we’ve only missed one game. Now we have to put this game aside, we have to concentrate on the league. We’ll think about Porto in a week’s time.

The Lazio coach tried to find the positives in the Biancocelesti’s defensive performance last night.

We did not concede so much to a dangerous team, we conceded two goals that could have been avoided. The second one was an accidental deflection, this is a pity because it thwarted a very good defensive performance.

He discussed the current condition of star striker Ciro Immobile, who did not feature in the match after suffering from some flu-like symptoms.

Let’s see, we’ll hear the latest news as soon as we get back to Rome.

Finally, Sarri discussed the return leg against Porto next week, but it was clear which match he was fully focused on.

We want to think only about Udinese, from Monday we will think about the return leg. I hope that Lazio fans will come and support us as they always do.

They were there tonight and we heard them. I have no doubts about the support of the Olimpico but I don’t want to talk about the return leg now because I only want to think about Udinese.

Lazio will travel to Udinese on Sunday before hosting Porto at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday next week.
