Sarri Thinks Lazio “Have Made Big Steps Forward” After Defeat to Napoli

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri thinks that the team has grown substantially over the last few months following last night’s 2-1 defeat to Napoli.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN (via LazioNews24) after the game, the 63-year-old Italian coach first reacted to the match between the Biancocelesti and the Partenopei yesterday.

We played a good game, especially in the first half, the regret is that we ended the half with a 0-0 scoreline.

We conceded a goal in the 93rd minute on a bad move by tripling a man on the wing, but if we think about the first leg where Napoli were unplayable for us, we have made big steps forward.

The Lazio coach touched on the team’s reaction following the deficit.

Against Porto we had ten minutes of carelessness after the 2-1, today we took risks by putting Luis Alberto in the middle and he very rarely plays there.

It was a calculated risk when we were down, but I repeat that the big naivety is tripling the man on the wing and making him come out so clean. It’s regrettable.

Sarri spoke about what aspects of play the squad still need to improve.

One on one in the open pitch we are the worst in Serie A, also for the characteristics of the players on an individual level. We often look for the ball too much and we have to improve.

Finally, Sarri discussed his and Lazio’s objectives still this season.

The objective is to do the best we can and improve our game by reading some situations better so that the games end with different results. We can’t accept a defeat tonight.

Lazio now sit 7th in the Serie A table after 27 games, with 43 points, one point behind intercity rivals Roma. The Biancocelesti’s next game is against Cagliari next weekend, giving the squad a nice rest in between matches.

Lazio will mostly play one game a week from now until the end of the season, as they are no longer competing in the Europa League or Coppa Italia.
