Lazio Youth Talent Luka Romero Slowly but Surely Making a Name for Himself

By Admin -
Lionel Scaloni recently announced the squad list for Argentina’s upcoming fixtures against Venezuela and Ecuador. Various players from Serie A were selected, such as Juan Musso, Nahuel Molina, Lucas Martinez Quarta, Giovanni Simeone, Paulo Dybala, Roberto Pereyra, and Nicolas Gonzalez; however, one interesting name that stood out was Lazio’s Luka Romero.

Background

Born in Mexico with Argentine parents, Luka Romero moved to Spain at a young age where he started his football career. It was not long until he attracted the interest of many football fans.

He signed an eight-year contract with Mallorca at the age of 10 and in his first four years, he scored 230 goals (in 108 matches). For this reason, it seemed no coincidence that Romero was being dubbed as the new Lionel Messi, and his first appearance in La Liga only endorsed that.

He made history becoming the youngest player to debut in the Spanish League at the age of 15 years 07 months 06 days in June 2020 against Real Madrid. He then scored his first professional goal in November 2020 against UD Logroñés in a 4-0 victory.

Lazio

Unfortunately for Mallorca, Romero decided to leave Spain and not extend his contract.

In the Summer of 2021, Lazio signed Romero until 2024 in a deal worth around €200,000. Since then, he has earned four first-team appearances in all competitions under coach Maurizio Sarri for a total of 39 minutes. He has reportedly impressed management and the rest of the squad in training, which is why he has remained with the first team instead of playing regularly with the Primavera side.

Despite being on the bench in the 3-1 victory over Empoli in Matchday 1, his first appearance in Serie A and for Lazio came against Spezia in Matchday 2 (6-1 victory) where he became the youngest debutant for the Biancocelesti at the age of 16 years 09 months 10 days. He beat the likes of Lorenzo De Silvestri (17 years 02 months 00 days), Stefano Di Chiara (17 years 02 months 10 days), and Marco Di Vaio (17 years 02 months 14 days).

Argentina

As Romero was born in Victoria de Durango, Mexico, and as he grew up in Spain, Romero had the option to play for either of these two countries. However, he ended up opting for Argentina.

He made his debut for the U15 side in November 2019 for the South American U-15 Championship and then received a call-up to the U17 side for the Montaigu Tournament just a few months later in March 2020.

Since then he has left Spain and transferred to Italy with Lazio, and as a result of his performances with the Biancocelesti in Rome, Lionel Scaloni summoned him to the recent Argentina senior squad training camp, showing how much promise he has.

This is just the beginning for the talented player. While itis yet to be determined if he will make the final cut or not to appear in the squad selection for the matches against Venezuela and Ecuador, either way, these are important signs of progress for Romero.
