Italy Women coach Milena Bertolini was impressed with what she saw in Formello as she visited the Lazio Women squad yesterday.
The 55-year-old Italian coach is preparing to lead the Italian women’s national team in the upcoming UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 and some Biancocelesti players will be hoping to squeeze their way into the squad. The Azzurri will face France, Iceland and Belgium in their group games.
Speaking to Lazio Style Channel (via LazioNews24), Bertolini first discussed the training centre in Formello and the quality of the competition in Serie A Femminile this season.
It’s nice to see the Formello training centre. It’s a pleasure for me to be here. I’ve found a beautiful and optimal structure for the girls and this fills my heart.
This is a great season, one of the most competitive in recent years, both in the Scudetto and in the relegation race. I see uncertain matches, which are also good for the national team.
She touched on if she was following any Lazio Women players ahead of a possible call-up to the national team.
We monitor all the teams in every division. Certainly, Lazio Women have interesting players who can have chances. The beginning of the season was difficult, but in this moment the Biancocelesti have recovered, as the last victory against Sassuolo testifies.
Catini’s team will be in with a chance of avoiding relegation until the very end. The objectives are important, we must obtain results and show quality football. The added value is the ethical beauty, it must be comforted by the results.
Finally, Bertolini discussed midfielder Giulia Ferrandi, who signed for the club just before Christmas.
I know Giulia well, I coached her when she played for Brescia years ago. Now she is mature, even if she has always had quality. Her arrival at Lazio has helped everyone, both her and the club.
Each person has their own time to mature. In women’s football you can have 27-year-old girls who can still improve a lot because they have had fewer opportunities than their male colleagues.
Lazio Women currently sit 11th in the Serie A Femminile table with seven points, eight behind 10th place Fiorentina and six ahead of bottom place Hellas Verona. Their next game is against 7th place Pomigliano on 20th March.
