Talks Begin Between Estranged Lazio Defender Acerbi & Inzaghi’s Inter

Francesco Acerbi seems destined to leave Lazio in the summer and exploratory talks have begun with Inter.

The 34-year-old Italian centre back has not had an easy season in Rome. He struggled to adapt to Maurizio Sarri’s system at the start of the campaign and he was much criticised for his poor performances. In a 3-1 win over Genoa before Christmas, he scored and celebrated by doing the ‘shhh’ gesture to his critics.

The Numbers Behind Lazio’s Consistent Struggles in Big Games

This infuriated the fans, who asked the 34-year-old to leave the Italian capital at the end of the season despite his immediate apology. After the Christmas break, Acerbi suffered a painful hamstring injury, forcing him to miss 11 games.

Sarri’s Contract Saga With Lazio Continues to Drag On as President Lotito Reflects

As reported by Italian newspaper Leggo (via LazioNews24), first contacts have started between Acerbi and Inter ahead of a possible Lazio departure in the summer. He would be happy to be reunited with Simone Inzaghi, who was a big fan of the Italian defender during his time in Rome.

His departure would free up Lazio’s wage bill by around €1.8m net per season, giving them a little more breathing room when rejuvenating the squad at the end of this campaign.
