Lazio’s Immobile ‘Another Azzurri Flop’ Who Was ‘Frenetic & Confused’ in Italy’s Loss

The Italian press heavily criticised Ciro Immobile following Italy’s disastrous 1-0 World Cup play-off loss to North Macedonia yesterday.

Roberto Mancini’s side were in complete control of the match at the Stadio Renzo Barbera yesterday evening but they failed to take advantage of their chances, allowing North Macedonia to scrap a last minute winner to book their place in the play-off final against Portugal.

As collected by TuttoMercatoWeb, Immobile did not have a good game for Italy yesterday. La Gazzetta dello Sport had a simple review of the Lazio captain, saying “too many times he has a bad match.” They felt as if he wouldn’t make another Azzurri appearance, noting “Frenetic, confused, imprecise, with that shirt that crushes him. In all probability the last with Italy.”

Corriere dello Sport called Immobile “another Azzurri flop” and added that “he seemed blocked by tension and pressure.” Tuttosport couldn’t say anything better about the 32-year-old striker, feeling that “he never lit up when the ball landed at his feet.” Corriere della Sera simply called him “irritating.”

The 32-year-old Immobile has scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in 55 caps for the Azzurri. His last goal for Italy came in their 3-0 win over Switzerland in the Euro 2020 group stages.
