Lazio Debating Signing Napoli Forward Mertens on a Free Transfer

Dries Mertens was one of the ideas mentioned during Maurizio Sarri’s meeting with president Claudio Lotito on Wednesday.

The Biancocelesti know that they’ll need to sign a backup striker to Ciro Immobile in the summer following Vedat Muriqi’s failure to convince the 63-year-old Italian coach earlier this season. The Kosovan joined RCD Mallorca in January but no replacement was picked up.

As reported by La Lazio Siamo Noi, Sarri brought up the idea of signing Mertens during his meeting with Lazio’s management on Wednesday.

Positive Atmosphere Following Sarri’s Decisive Meeting With Lazio President Lotito

The Belgian veteran’s contract expires with Napoli at the end of this season and he’d like to end his career in the Campania capital, but Aurelio De Laurentiis’ side are a little lukewarm about renewing his deal. He’s asked for a two-year deal worth €3.5 million net per season, something that the Partenopei are unconvinced about.

Sarri, from a technical point of view, would gladly welcome Mertens back into his squad, even if the age and cost of a deal create a few doubts. It’s unlikely that Lazio would offer over €2-2.5 million net per season.
