Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Dominates the Latest Transfer Rumours

There is still plenty to be decided in Serie A and across Europe before a line is drawn under the 2021/22 season. But already, the attention of the pundits is starting to be drawn towards matters of contracts. There is a feeling in the air that this year’s transfer window could be a busy one, and right now, Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is the man that has got everybody speculating.

Although the Serbian midfielder still has two years left on his contract with the Biancocelesti, there are inevitable question marks over whether he would choose to stay after that; there is even talk that with no European football next year being a real possibility, a big name sale could be needed to balance the books in these difficult times.

Manchester United Ready to Pounce for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Should Milinkovic-Savic depart, his most likely destination will be Old Trafford. Manchester United are reportedly eager to sign the midfielder, although there will surely be interest from other top teams, too.

If all this sounds like déjà vu, it’s because this is not the first time United have gone fishing for Milinkovic-Savic. Back in the summer of 2019, the bookmakers had him odds-on to be wearing a Red Devils shirt before the summer was out. In fact, some had him as short as 4/9. What the bookies had not bargained for at the time was Claudio Lotito’s intransigence; he refused to entertain any notion of a deal for less than £100 million.

The world of 2022, however, is a very different place. Given the financial background and Lazio’s perilous position on the table, Il Tempo reports that a price tag of €70 million, a little more than half the amount sought three years ago, has been mooted. Once again, bookies are weighing in both in Rome, Manchester and further afield. Fans across the pond who fancy a flutter on Milinkovic-Savic’s ultimate destination can even do so thanks to a range of NJ sportsbook promos on offer right now.

Paris Saint-Germain Also in the Frame for Lazio’s Serbian Midfielder

Given what happened, or rather what did not happen in 2019, nobody is taking anything for granted.

Milinkovic-Savic has become the mainstay of the Lazio midfield in the seven years he has been playing at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Fans have seen him mature from a promising talent to a world-class and highly popular performer; in short, nobody wants to see him leave, and he might well remain and see out his contract. Even if he does move on, Manchester United is no foregone conclusion.

PSG has a reputation for making the big signings that matter with money no object. Even they will surely have half an eye on the budget this year, but even so, the rumour is that they are prepared to outbid United. PSG’s President Nasser Al Khelaifi met Milinkovic-Savic’s entourage during a visit to Rome last month and local sources say he has €80 million ready and waiting to seal the deal.

With Real Madrid and Juventus also reported to be showing interest, the attention surrounding Milinkovic-Savic will only increase as the transfer window draws closer.
