Lucas Leiva Keen to Stay With Lazio but Renewal Looks Unlikely

Lucas Leiva wants to stay with Lazio for another year but the club have different ideas.

The 35-year-old Brazilian midfielder’s contract expires with the Biancocelesti at the end of this season, meaning his five-year stay in Rome is now drawing to a close. Leiva has featured semi-consistently under Maurizio Sarri this season, losing his starting spot to Danilo Cataldi on a number of occasions.

As reported by La Repubblica (via LazioNews24), Lucas Leiva wants to sign a contract renewal with Lazio in order to extend his stay in the Italian capital for at least another year, but he seems destined for disappointment.

Lazio have not yet approached the Brazilian regarding a renewal and they seem unlikely to offer him a new contract at this stage, ready to rejuvenate and revitalise their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Lucas Leiva has made 39 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2027 minutes. In that time, he’s provided one assist, slowly being phased out in favour of Cataldi.
