Denis Vavro underlined the toll his tough time at Lazio took on his mental health in a recent interview.
The Slovakian centre back joined the Biancocelesti in July 2019 in a deal worth €10 million from FC Copenhagen, being another one of Igli Tare’s riskier signings. The risk did not pay off. Vavro only made 21 appearances for Lazio across two-and-a-half seasons, failing to convince both Simone Inzaghi and Maurizio Sarri.
Speaking in an interview with Discovery+ (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Vavro revealed that his experience with Lazio almost pushed him to retire from football completely.
Sometimes I thought: ‘Ok, I’m stopping my football career’. It wasn’t for me at all to sit on the bench or in the stands. So I told my agent that I didn’t like playing football any more. My head was so tired.
I told my family: ‘I’m going to play for Lazio until my contract expires and I’ll earn the money, then I’ll finish my football career’. I didn’t like football. I didn’t watch any games. I only watched films on TV instead.
The 26-year-old Vavro made his FC Copenhagen return back in the January transfer window and he’s immediately become a first team regular, playing the full 90 minutes of every possible game following his arrival.
A buy option has been attached for his loan move from Lazio and the Slovakian centre back will undoubtedly be praying for the Danish side to activate it.
