Francesco Acerbi was the hero in Lazio’s nail biting 4-3 win over Spezia yesterday and he underlined his joy following the full time whistle.

The 34-year-old Italian centre back snatched the winner in the dying minutes of the match against the Ligurian side yesterday, sending the squad and the travelling fans wild. Acerbi has not had an easy year under Maurizio Sarri and things seemed to be approaching a negative end, but now he has something to smile about again.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) after the game, Acerbi first discussed his difficult situation at Lazio.

It hasn’t been easy for five months. I’m someone who goes his own way, works and commits. It’s been a difficult year in some ways, even with the fans. My goal is to do well for my team-mates, for Lazio and for myself.

I’ll go on until the end trying to do my best even in difficult times. The only thing is the regret that if you touch my person I can’t let anyone else.

We want to make it four wins in a row and reach Europe because this squad, despite the criticism, has always given its soul with Sarri and deserves this. Let’s hope we go on like this.

The former Sassuolo defender was a little cryptic about his future.

My future lies in the next game and the next training session. My future is to go home to my little girl and that’s it. Whatever happens will happen.

Finally, Acerbi looked back at the season as a whole.

With the coach’s formation, if you get the pressure wrong the whole team goes out. We concede a lot of counter-attacks, but we run a lot and we always have commitment and desire.

Even if sometimes it seems like we’re not committed because we don’t get to the ball. This squad puts their soul into it and deserves a lot. I’m proud to be part of this squad.

The 34-year-old Acerbi seems destined to leave Lazio in the summer, with a number of top clubs keen to secure his signature. Juventus, Inter and Milan are all reportedly interested in signing the Biancocelesti veteran, who is now hoping to finish his Lazio career in the best possible way.
