Is It Time for a Rebuild at Lazio?

By Admin -

Currently ranked in the top six teams in the 2021-22 Serie A season, Lazio is no longer the best side in the top league of Italian football – but is a full rebuild necessary?

Lazio last won the Serie A title in the 1999-2000 season with only one title win preceding the achievement of the number one spot in the 1973-74 season. To get to their former winning glory once more, perhaps it is time for a rebuild at the club.

With owner and chairman Claudio Lotito wanting top-level results, it may be time for Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio to change their current approach.

Lazio’s Current 2021-22 Performance

Lazio has not had the worst of seasons in the 2021-22 season, but it is one that could have done better.

The team are currently rated in the top six in the current 2021-22 season of Serie A, surrounded by the likes of Milan, Inter, Napoli, Juventus and Roma. However, it is at the bottom of the top six that the squad currently sits; a position that they would be keen to reverse given the opportunity.

The current form of the side is not bad either, with victories against the lower-rated teams. However, the problems arise when the squad is pitched against the larger clubs in the league. With a 2-1 defeat against Milan, a 3-0 defeat against Roma, a 2-1 defeat against Napoli and a 2-1 defeat against Inter, a clear pattern forms.

The side may not be battling for relegation positions, but it is clear that the quality cannot be compared with the best of the league.

A Peek at the Lazio Squad

The details surrounding the recent performances of the Lazio team can be found in the squad with a handful of key players in the team.

Ciro Immobile is one of the team highlights and is not only one of the top goal scorers in the Italian League but in Europe. In the race for the golden boot, only Robert Lewandowski leads Ciro Immobile with Karim Benzema ranked third in the current rankings.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is another key to the current strong performances of Lazio with the 27-year-old Serbian midfielder vital for key passes and aerial performances. It is, however, rumoured that the Lazio star is interested in a £60m transfer to English Premier League with speculation around Manchester United

Perhaps then, it is the defensive players at Lazio that require a reshuffle. With a lower goal difference than the remaining top six clubs in Serie A, Lazio’s weakness appears to be in the back line.

A rework with the defending players may be the first step to rebuilding Lazio into a trophy-winning side. Only time will tell how the club responds to the criticism and moves forward.

How to Bet on Lazio in Serie A

In the UK, there are countless sportsbooks and betting sites that allow bettors to wager on Serie A – but not all are created equally.

Bet365, 888Sport and Paddy Power all offer betting markets covering Serie A, but it is Sky Bet that is recommended as the top bookie for Italian football. There is a huge number of betting markets available, a range of existing player bonuses and competitive odds on the beautiful game.

Betting football fans can find a guide of Sky Bet free bets to claim a healthy welcome offer when joining SkyBet for the first time. With up to £20 available on sign-up for players betting a minimum of £5 at the betting site, there’s more than one reason to give SkyBet a trial run.

Final Thoughts

Lazio may not be in the title fight for the 21-22 Serie A season, but the team is not rapidly falling down the table.

The current top six positions may not be what fans are looking for, but it could be a lot worse for the Italian squad. Their 2020 qualification for the Champions League, for the first time in 12 years, is proof that Lazio does have the potential to reach the top positions once more.

Their post-Covid performances may have left a lot to desire, but a full rebuild at Lazio is likely an exaggeration of what calcio fans should expect from the club.
