The Reasons Why Sarri Has Not Signed a Contract Extension With Lazio

The story of Maurizio Sarri and his apparent contract renewal with Lazio has been rumbling on all season, so what’s really going on?

Biancocelesti president Claudio Lotito made it clear after the first few months of the season that he fully believed in the 63-year-old Italian coach’s project in Rome and so spoke publicly about the desire to tie him down to a longer deal. Sarri is currently tied to Lazio until 2023 and Lotito wanted to push this date back a little.

At the Christmas dinner, Lotito again spoke about Sarri’s renewal and things looked to be progressing well, with many expecting it to be signed within a matter of weeks. Then the incredibly disappointing January transfer window came and went, and this seemed to be the turning point.

Sarri is clearly concerned about the quality of transfer windows he’ll have in Rome but has consistently reiterated that he’s not been offered a concrete proposal by Lotito yet, leaving the situation a little hazy.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), the situation will become significantly clearer by the end of this month, when the Serie A season ends. Lotito is hoping to extend Sarri’s deal from 2023 to 2025, removing a clause valid for foreign clubs.

The Lazio coach is waiting to see what happens in the summer, hoping for around seven or eight new reinforcements to arrive. Time will tell now what happens, but it’s also clear that Sarri does hold some fondness for the Roman club.
