Apollo’s Thoughts On: Lazio’s Upswing in Form, Romagnoli Deal & Defence Overhaul

Lazio had one of the worst January Transfer Windows in Serie A but now they’re one of the most in-form teams, another example of the emotional rollercoaster Biancocelesti fans are forced to endure. Whilst the Alessio Romagnoli news is exciting, it could also be another missed deal that further embitters supporters.

Upswing in Form

Maurizio Sarri was not the only one who was aghast at Claudio Lotito and Igli Tare’s work in January. The only signing was Jovane Cabral, a winger that is not particularly fit to play as a back-up to Ciro Immobile, and the failure to secure Nicolo Casale was yet another transfer market embarrassment.

Since the turn of the year though, things have been different in the Italian capital. Lazio have scored 18 goals in 2022, more than all the teams above them in the league table. Looking at the last 10 games, they are the third-best performers in Serie A behind Juventus and Milan, picking up 18 points.

The media reports that Sarri was looking to band together with the squad following the disappointing January market initially seemed like typical press fluff, to be honest, but evidently, there was at least a shred of truth to that. The team does look more gelled than ever and the signs of Sarrismo are exciting.

Lazio now seem to have a genuine shot at European qualification, only being two points behind 5th place Atalanta, but the Champions League still seems a step too far this season, which is fair enough considering that it’s Sarri’s first year. Alessio Romagnoli & Defence Overhaul

The news that Alessio Romagnoli is inching closer to signing on a free transfer is very intriguing but there is one thing that all fans should never forget: this is Lazio we ware talking about. If any club can absolutely torpedo a deal over the minutest of details, is Lotito’s crew.

The Italian defender would be an incredible addition to the squad. He’d bring experience, leadership and genuine passion, incredibly important qualities as the team look to overhaul the defence. Considering how things have developed in the Lombardy capital recently, it’s likely that Romagnoli would appreciate being such a revered figure in the Eternal City.

A key reason why the Romagnoli news gets the heart pumping is because of the need for a defensive overhaul. Goalkeepers Thomas Strakosha and Pepe Reina both have expiring contracts and both will probably depart, with the former being a greater loss than the latter.

Patric will certainly be leaving and Luiz Felipe also now seems set for a move to Real Betis, removing two regular features of Sarri’s squad. Then there’s Francesco Acerbi. The former Sassuolo man has quickly become a pariah in Rome and considering his age and physical concerns, maybe it is time we bid farewell to il Leone.
