Reina Decides to Stay With Lazio After Automatic Contract Renewal

Pepe Reina will stay on as the Lazio second choice goalkeeper following his automatic contract renewal.

The 39-year-old Spanish veteran started the Serie A season as Maurizio Sarri’s first choice option in Rome, starting the first 15 consecutive matches, but he then lost out to Thomas Strakosha, who played every remaining minute in the league from that point onwards.

As reported by Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), achieving qualification to the Europa League triggered an automatic one-year contract renewal clause in Reina’s contract, extending his deal to June 2023.

Reina, who arrived two summers ago from Milan, had been considering his future for the last few months and he’s now decided to stay on as the second choice Lazio goalkeeper.

The 39-year-old Reina knows Sarri well from their time together at Napoli and his experience will undoubtedly be useful in helping Lazio’s new number one adapt to the tactical system.
