Vecino ‘Surprised’ by Interest From Lazio but No Talks Yet

Matias Vecino expressed surprise at the rumours linking him to Lazio and confirmed that no talks have been started yet.

The 30-year-old Uruguayan midfielder is leaving Inter on a free transfer next month after five years in the Lombardy capital, a cycle which ended relatively anonymously under Simone Inzaghi. Vecino only made two Serie A starts this campaign, hardly featuring as he played only 363 minutes of league action all season.

Speaking to Ultimo Arco (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Vecino first discussed his tough year under Inzaghi at Inter.

I was shocked by what happened at Inter. At the beginning of the season the coach told me that my contractual situation would not interfere with my participation.

The 30-year-old Inter midfielder then commented on Lazio’s interest and his plans for the future.

I was surprised by the rumour about a possible transfer to Lazio, I haven’t spoken to anyone from the club, not even the coach whom I know well and of whom I have great memories.

Now I’m only thinking about the national team and the games in the United States. I am open to various possibilities, I am not closed to any league and my agent is handling several requests in Italy, England, Spain, France and Germany.

I will choose my next destination based on the club that wants me, it will not be a choice made based on the World Cup.

In his five years with Inter, Vecino made 127 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists. He was a part of the team that won a Scudetto, a Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana.

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri remembers Vecino well from their time together at Empoli and he’s keen to be reunited with the Uruguayan this summer.
