Lazio Set Sights on West Ham Defender Diop

Lazio are considering a move for West Ham centre back Issa Diop this summer as they work to strengthen their backline.

The Biancocelesti need to sign at least one or two new defenders this summer in order to shore up the defence, with Luiz Felipe leaving on a free transfer and Francesco Acerbi likely to depart after a torrid season in the Italian capital.

A number of players are already on the list of possible options, including Alessio Romagnoli and Victor Chust, but now a new name has been added.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), Lazio have started thinking about making a move for the 25-year-old Diop, whose contract expires with West Ham in 2023.

The Frenchman struggled for consistent Premier League minutes this season and seems likely to be sold in the coming months.

An experienced Premier League centre back, Diop may be interested in the move to Lazio as he looks to relaunch his career following an inconsistent campaign under David Moyes, where he only made 10 league starts.

Apollo’s Thoughts

With a market value of around €13 million, it does seem a little hard to imagine Lazio making a move for Diop this summer.

The team need to sign a number of reinforcements and spending a significant amount on only one defender doesn’t seem like the most probable outcome, unless West Ham are open to some form of loan deal.

  1. Like you said, his contract expires in 2023, so why would West Ham loan him out and then lose him for free next year?
