The withdrawal of Nicolo Zaniolo from Coverciano has been seen by many as the result of the toxic situation involving Mattia Zaccagni, but what is going on between the pair?
Italy takes on Argentina, Germany, Hungary and England over the next few week; a great opportunity for fans to make football predictions as they try and bounce back following their failure to reach the World Cup.
Things were always likely to be a little tense between the pair as a result of their dating decisions; the Roma talent previously dated Neapolitan influencer Chiara Nasti and their relationship came to an end last year. She has since entered a relationship with the Lazio and the pair are now expecting a child together.
The initial spark came from Roma’s celebrations following their Europa Conference League victory last week. Whilst the fans were cheering under the Colosseum, a chant was started which went “Zaccagni’s son is Zaniolo’s son!”. This was quickly spammed on Nasti’s Instagram profile, forcing her to completely turn off her comments.
Whilst Zaniolo didn’t sing along with the chant, he was seen dancing and laughing to it. Nasti clearly didn’t appreciate this, jabbing back on social media with “with that shrimp there’s no telling how he already had one.” Her comments reportedly surprised Zaniolo’s mother Francesca, who is still on good terms with Nasti.
The situation was starting to reach a critical point of trashiness. Whether by fate or not, Zaniolo withdrew from the Azzurri training camp yesterday with a reported ankle strain and muscle problem, but many fans believe that this is simply an excuse to separate the pair following the drama.
This does seem a little unlikely, though, as reports suggest that the two were seen sitting together amicably at a table earlier in the day, which suggests that things have started to calm down between them now. The Roma forward is also genuinely suffering from a minor injury and so the Azzurri doctors do not want to take an unnecessary risks.
Zaccagni had previously come under fire after his and Nasti’s decision to book out the Stadio Olimpico for their baby shower, something which many observers poked fun at. The influencer did not react particularly well here, responding with “you despise because you can’t have the same.”
Hopefully this situation will fade into memory now as it’s a fairly embarrassing look for all parties involved, creating unnecessary off the pitch distractions for both players and sparking even more tension between fans. Both players can play a key role in the Azzurri squad of the future, so it’s important to resolve any toxicity early on.
