Maurizio Sarri is doing everything he can to try and convince Dries Mertens to join Lazio this summer.
The 35-year-old Belgian forward will be a free agent at the end of this month after his contract expires with Napoli. He confirmed recently that he hasn’t been in talks with the club regarding a renewal, making a departure at the end of the month increasingly likely now.
As reported by Il Messaggero (via LazioNews24), Sarri is working hard to try and convince Mertens to lower his salary demands in order to facilitate his move to Lazio. The Belgian forward is asking for €4m net per season on a two-year deal, figures that are a little too high for the Roman club.
If the 35-year-old expresses willingness to lower his salary, Lazio would look to move in and try and finalise a deal. Mertens shined under Sarri during their three years together in Naples, being reinvented as a false nine to great success.
