Pepe Reina Surprises Lazio by Requesting Contract Termination

Pepe Reina has officially left Lazio after deciding to terminate his contract with the club a year early.

The Spaniard joined the club on a free transfer in September 2020 after a tough spell with Milan and he soon replaced Thomas Strakosha in the starting lineup. His deal was initially for two years, with an automatic one-year extension clause should the team qualify for European competition in the season just gone.

As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, Pepe Reina and Lazio have agreed to terminate his contract a year ahead of the expiry date. He is not keen to stay following the automatic extension and so a return to Spain is now on the horizon, with a move to Villarreal seeming likely.

The 39-year-old Reina made 54 appearances across all competitions with Lazio, keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding 89 goals in that time. Both Simone Inzaghi and Maurizio Sarri chose to start the Spaniard over Strakosha, although the Albanian did win back his spot under the latter.
