Fresh Talks Between Free Agent Mertens & Lazio Coach Sarri

Maurizio Sarri is still incredibly keen to bring Dries Mertens to Lazio and fresh talks have been held between the pair.

The 35-year-old Belgian forward is now a free agent following his contract expiration with Napoli earlier this week, making him available to join a new club. Sarri has been keen to pick up Mertens for a while now, believing he’d be the perfect fit for his Lazio project.

As reported by Alfredo Pedulla, Sarri has been in contact with Mertens over the last few days to discuss a possible free transfer to Lazio. The 35-year-old has given total availability to his former coach but he’s also made it clear that he has four different offers to evaluate.

For once, the player’s salary wouldn’t prove prohibitive for the Biancocelesti; the Belgian forward would be happy with a salary as low as €2.5 million net per season and he’d likely be the perfect backup for star striker Ciro Immobile.

The ball is now in Lotito’s court, with the Lazio president being the final decision maker regarding a possible deal.
