Matteo Cancellieri is continuing to impress at the Lazio pre-season training camp in Auronzo di Cadore and he could become a regular feature in the first team next season.
The Biancocelesti have been looking for a reliable backup to Ciro Immobile for a long time now but the solution could be right in front of their eyes; the 20-year-old Cancellieri only joined the club a couple of weeks ago but he’s already starting to shine under Maurizio Sarri.
As detailed by Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24), Cancellieri has been deployed as a false nine by Sarri and he’s also impressed on the left wing, having great flair and wonderful off-the-ball movement.
He could be the right choice to play backup to Immobile when needed, filling a role similar to the one played by Dries Mertens during Sarri’s time with Napoli.
Sarri had initially asked for a new centre forward like Francesco Caputo but now he may be satisfied enough with the 20-year-old Italian.
