Patric: ‘Renewing With Lazio Was an Easy Choice’

Patric Gil discussed his decision to renew his contract with Lazio, his favourite memory from last season and which player he expects to shine in Serie A next season.

The 29-year-old Spanish defender recently put pen to paper on a new five-year contract with the Biancocelesti, confirming his long-term future in Rome after convincing Maurizio Sarri last season. His tactical flexibility proved invaluable and he proved to be one of the most accurate passers in the league.

Speaking to Lazio’s media outlets (via LazioNews24), Patric first discussed his decision to sign a five-year contract renewal with Lazio.

A huge pleasure. The fans notice the work I’ve done, renewing was an easy choice, it’s nice to be here, I feel at home.

Like all families, there are also moments of difficulty but now I’m living a beautiful period in which I’m happy and I’ll try to prolong that as much as possible.

It means a lot to me, I try to grow every year to take Lazio higher and higher. Compared to when I arrived, the club has grown, we went to the Champions League two years ago, we always play in Europe and we always aim for big goals.

He touched on which moment he’ll remember most from last season.

Probably Milinkovic-Savic’s equaliser at home to Juventus, when we mathematically qualified for the Europa League. Last year we came from an important change in tactics, with the change from Inzaghi to Sarri.

From Christmas onwards, the team understood what the coach wanted and played much better, deserving European qualification.

The Spaniard revealed which players he idolised most as a kid.

I really liked Dani Alves and Sergio Ramos, I didn’t have their posters but they were my idols as a child.

The Lazio defender spoke about his favourite areas of Rome.

I’d say the Colosseum and the Vatican. In general, I like going around the centre. I live in Olgiata, I’m very comfortable there.

He revealed which Lazio player of the past is his favourite.

There have been many, but as a defender I’d say Nesta. For Lazio, and not only, he was a very important figure.

Finally, Patric discussed which player he expects to shine in Serie A next season.

There are many young players I like, I’d say Udinese’s Deulofeu. He did well last year, he’s like my brother.

We lived together for six years in Barcelona, even as a child he was phenomenal, then he had a few injuries but he loves football and is a great professional, who aims to improve every season.
