Vecino: ‘I Want to Be Important for Lazio, I Know Sarri Well’

Matias Vecino underlined his hunger and ambition at his Lazio unveiling today, highlighting that he still remembers Maurizio Sarri and his system well.

The Uruguayan spent one year at Sarri’s Empoli in the 2014-15 campaign, where he clearly made a strong impression on the Italian coach, who wanted to be reunited with the midfielder as early as the January transfer window of this year. After his contract expired with Inter last month, it only seemed like a matter of time until he joined Lazio.

Speaking at a press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) today, Vecino first spoke about his arrival at Lazio and how he feels.

I spoke with the coach, we know each other well. We’ll see what my role in this Lazio team will be. If I’m here evidently it’s because destiny wanted it that way.

There was already talk in the past, then there was no way. I know very well what team I came to, I can make my contribution.

He gave his thoughts on Sarri, who pushed hard to bring him to Rome this summer.

He is the same person, the same coach. Even the way he talks, the way he explains things, I feel like I’m back in my Empoli days. I know well how the system works.

The 30-year-old touched on his and the team’s goals heading into the upcoming season.

My goal is to feel useful, I want to be important for the team. I’m hungry, with a coach who knows me well, and after one year I think the Champions League is within reach.

The former Inter midfielder spoke about his international experience.

To have played so much with my national team is something unique. I had the chance to play the World Cup, in the Copa America. There is great tradition for football, soon there will also be the World Cup again.

Finally, Vecino gave his thoughts on his and Lazio’s condition ahead of the Serie A campaign.

I was training with the national team, along with other teammates like Caceres and Cavani. I think I am in a good condition. There was a need for a footballer with my characteristics.
