Why Luis Alberto Didn’t Leave Lazio for Sevilla This Summer

Despite angling for a move, Luis Alberto failed to secure a transfer from Lazio to Sevilla this summer.

Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) details how the Spanish midfielder handed in a transfer request last month in a bid to push for a return to the Iberian peninsula, with Sevilla in particular his preferred destination. Talks were opened between the two clubs and Lazio asked for a €3-4m loan deal with a €17-18m obligation to buy clause attached.

Sevilla were unable to meet these demands, however. The Spanish side needed to pick up some new defensive reinforcements, limiting their funds, and Lazio completely rejected the inclusion of Oliver Torres in a possible deal.

The failure to sell Luis Alberto this summer meant that Lazio couldn’t pick up Hellas Verona talent Ivan Ilic, so they could look to return for the former Manchester City man next year.

The Spanish midfielder will not be leaving Rome this summer and now needs to earn back his place in the squad, as he’s set to be benched for the third match in a row now.
